What to Watch out for — Jewelry Care for Summer

Tips for care of your jewelry in summer are similar to the advice I would give all-year-round. BUT, since most people spend more time outside, there are a few things to watch out for:

ring in sand

  • Remove jewelry and put in a safe place before swimming, strenuous activity or gardening.
  • Keep jewelry out of the sand, since the abrasion of the sand can scratch stones and metals.
  • Some gemstones and sterling silver may be adversely affected by swings of temperature, exposure to strong sun and very cold water.
  • Remove jewelry before applying lotions and bug spray, since jewelry should never be exposed to chemicals.
  • Although creams, sprays and lotions generally will not damage diamonds, they could cause the polish of other gemstones to dull. Lotions may get into crevices and make jewelry seem dirty.

For more information on individual gemstones, see our Gemstone Care Guides.

So remember to keep jewelry safe and away from harsh chemicals. Wipe your jewelry with a soft cotton cloth after wearing, and it should give you year-round pleasure.
